Images from The Michael Varah Artist in Residence workshops, part of the Watts Gallery 'Big Issues' project, the outreach initiative of the Watts 'Art for All'  learning programme:  Both Mary and GF Watts believed that art could transform lives, that it could take people to different places and as artist in residence, Sophie wanted to share this experience with the women at HMP Send. Sophie works with a group of between 8 and 10 women over a sustained series of workshops and has seen the women progress, succeed and push themselves to achieve. Looking at the formal elements of painting, technique and contextualising their work by looking at other artists' work the women have built up a language and critical insight that has enabled them to turn ideas into a body of sustained work. The women exhibit their work regularly with Koestler at the London South Bank, the New Beginnings at the Lightbox, Woking, and at Watts Big Issues/Art for All exhibition. 'In our Time' is the first prisoner curated exhibition to be held inside a prison and open by invitation only to members of the public and was first held at the prison, HMP Send June 2017. Sophie, Sally Varah and the women in the group are now working towards 'In Our Time' #2. Private View in June 2018.
